Convert any headphones into an iPhone headset.

Shure’s Music Phone Adapter (MPA) is our favorite iPhone solution, since it lets you use the headphones you’re most comfortable with. It has an iPhone-compatible jack at one end and a microphone module with an Answer/End/Pause button and a female 3.5mm audio jack for connecting to your own headphones. We connected the adapter to the Shure SE110 in-ear headphones, whose cabling is modular; the top half is fairly short, so when used with the adapter, the cable is the right length, but the mic lays around your navel. The MPA comes with three different sizes of foam and silicone tips and a carrying pouch. Shure’s coated memory-foam tips are the most comfortable on the market, and they stay in your ear securely–especially if you wear the cables over the tops of your ears.

Online Golf Equipment Reviews Give Indispensable Advice

I hate trial and error when it comes to spending money. I much prefer unbiased golf equipment reviews to make my purchasing decisions. I’ve even been known to whip out my iPhone and use its web browser to look up a product review while I was in a pro shop. This has often saved me from wasting money on a product that wasn’t right for me.

But where do you look and how can you tell what’s biased and what’s unbiased? And where to find a good site? Things have changed over the past 15 years. Back then, email was a productivity tool and not an exercise in frustration with all the spam. Likewise, websites gave you actual information whereas today half of them are a canned paragraph of useless text and a barrage of obnoxious ads.

My ideal golf website is created and run by a true golfaholic. Somehow who knows the game inside out, yet also knows how to write and run a website. The site would explain the game of golf, describe all the equipment needed for golf, contain tips and resources on how to improve your game, and so on. It’d include factual information about the game, historic tidbits, as well as plenty of straightforward reviews of golf clubs, golf shows, and golf carts. I want to learn why today’s golf balls go farther and why they are so much easier to control. And I want to know, how in experts’ unbiased opinion, balls from Maxfli, Titleist, Nike, Callaway and others differ.

Yes, I know; you can read about all this in magazines and there certainly are enough golf commercials and ads out there. But just knowing that leading golfers uses Ogio or Burton golf bags or some advanced Ping hybrid doesn’t help me much. I am not Tiger Woods or Ernie Els. I just want to know how well golf bags, golf carts, golf shoes or golf club work for me. I don’t need the hype. I just want the facts.

To give you one example of what I am looking for. I do believe in training aids. I am not a golfing natural and I need all the help I can get. But I also don’t want to waste money on stuff that doesn’t work. So why should I not benefit from the knowledge and expertise of someone who has tried it all? For example, I had no idea how the LeaderBoard Golf Trainer worked. But I found a detailed description on a golf site and now I know all about it. That doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll buy it, but now I know what it is.

Another technology I’ve become interested in is golf GPS. You can buy those at discount stores, but I wanted to know how they work and where they fit into my game. Once again, an online golf equipment review website came to the rescue. It’s just invaluable to have an expert describes a technology, how it can help you, and then point you in the right direction.

Do sites like the ones I described above have to completely non-commercial? I don’t think so. Everyone deserves fair compensation for their work and if a really good golf equipment review site has links to stores and sites the author has had good experiences with, that’s fine with me. I’d rather buy from a place that comes highly recommended.

How To Put Movies On Your Iphone

Posted by admin under News on Tuesday Jan 24, 2012

If you own an Iphone and you’d like to learn to put movies on it, you’ve come to the right place. If you’re reading this, you probably already know that the Iphone is a fantastic piece of technology-not only does it contain most of the features of the smash hit Ipod range, but it also contains the features of today’s cutting edge cellphone technology.

The ability to watch movies on your Iphone is predicted to be one of the most popular factors for people who are considering purchasing one. If you do plan to use your Iphone to watch movies, you will first need to transfer movie files that are in the correct format from your computer to your Iphone. Most people aren’t in the position to have lots of MP4 format movies already stored on their computer, so in most cases it is necessary to purchase a î™”ipper?program, which is computer program that reads the data from a DVD and stores it on your computer. Most modern rippers have the option to save it as various kinds of files, and as long as MP4 is an option, you should be fine as this is the format the Iphone needs.

Once you have some ripping software, you should be able to transfer your existing dvd collection to your Iphone without too much trouble at all.

The other option when you are looking to put movies on your Iphone is to download them directly from the internet. A few years ago this would have seemed like sheer madness, but with easier and faster internet access than ever before, it’s never been easier or more convenient to download movies to your computer. Once you have them downloaded, you can then transfer them to your Iphone as you see fit.

Many people use the various torrent and peer to peer sites to download their movies from, but many people don’t realise how dangerous this can be-in more ways than one! Downloading from these kinds of sites is not only illegal, but it can seriously harm your computer, maybe kill it altogether, and if it does that to your computer imagine what will happen to your Iphone!

An altogether safer alternative is one of the newer download sites that are springing up. The way these work is that they charge you a one off fee, and once you pay it you are officially a member and they give you unlimited access to their downloads for life. It’s a very neat way of downloading movies for use with your Iphone. As a bonus, you’ll also usually find that many of the sites don’t limit your downloads to movies only-you can get games and TV shows and even music for use with your Iphone.

Hopefully you’ll find this article useful if you are looking to download movies to your Iphone.

As an Iphone owner, you may or may not know that as well as being able to use the safari browser to play online, or browser based games as they are known you can also download games for the Iphone. Check out these tips for downloading games onto your Iphone.

First of all, your little Iphone is packed with more computing power than you may possibly realise. While browser games may be cool, they can often be a little basic, so you will need to download things to get the real cream of the crop.

The second point is to make sure and have a good look around some of the download sites. There are quite a few of them around now, and you can find the variety between them quite staggering. Also, one of the coolest things is that if you find the right sites, the game downloads will be totally free, which is obviously great.

Something else to consider is that some download sites can be pretty dangerous to your computer, because of viruses etc. If you are familiar with file sharing sites or P2P sites or whatever you want to call them, you may well have experience of viruses etc. This is because sites like this most often don’t have any guidelines or regulation by the site owners or webmaster, allowing users to upload whatever they like. It seems cool to have this freedom at first, but it means that many of the sites are riddled with viruses and spyware etc.

As a final tip, always look for reports or reviews from a previous customer ?it’s very easy to make a site look all exciting and trustworthy on the internet, so looking out for someone else’s experience with that particular site can be very helpful indeed ?it can save you money in the long run and can even help your computer stay protected from virus and other nasty things!

You’ll find that with virtually all of the worthwhile Iphone download sites, you will need to pay some kind of fee before you get access to the downloads. This fee is usually what helps them provide the free downloads in the first place, as it helps them cover costs and administration etc. It’s not such a bad thing either, because the small fee in question will most often cover you for life, which obviously represents pretty good value.

You’ve now got at least a working knowledge of how to download games for your Iphone, so happy downloading and thanks for reading!

Go Online to Buy Hot Consumer Electronics for the Holidays

Although some shoppers continue to favor brick-and-mortar stores, an increasing number of consumers are finding better prices and greater selections of consumer electronics through online stores. Find out why…
ps2, ps3, xbox 360, nintendo wii, nokia, samsung, motorola, apple ipods, gaming systems, consumer electronics
As in recent years, experts are forecasting that consumer electronics will top wish lists in the upcoming holiday season. And, although some shoppers continue to favor brick-and-mortar stores, an increasing number of consumers are finding better prices and greater selections of consumer electronics through online stores.

There are three categories of consumer electronics that are forecast to be especially hot this holiday season:

Gaming Systems

The recent launch of Halo 3 left no doubt among entertainment industry experts that video games and video game consoles can rake in more money than Hollywood movie premieres. With over $3 million in sales the first week, Halo 3 – the Xbox 360 signature game – dealt Microsoft a winning hand.

But the Xbox 360 isn’t the only gaming system set to heat up during the holiday gift giving season. With its enhanced physicality and interactive community, Nintendo Wii is still considered the breakout gaming system of the decade. From the compelling Wii characters to the dexterity-challenging Nunchuk, every aspect of the Nintendo Wii is engaging and enchanting.

Although in some circles Sony’s PlayStation has been left holding the bag, PS3 gaming systems are still hot commodities, especially for families with children. As some of the other gaming systems have skewed their video game releases to the teenage and adult markets, PS3 and PS2 systems have remained home to a vast array of kid-friendly games.

Cell Phones

Although cell phones are ubiquitous, they continue to be in demand. And, despite the hoopla associated with this year’s launch of the innovative Apple iPhone, this holiday season will find most shoppers buying established cell phone brands like Nokia, Samsung, and Motorola.

Music and Video Players

When it comes to consumer electronics and the holidays, more people than ever before will be unwrapping music and video players. Apple iPods are expected to be in high demand, as will portable DVD players. And, with an increasing number of people becoming familiar with DVD recorders’ multitude of features, DVD player/recorders will also be hot commodities this holiday season.

Buying Consumer Electronics Online

Because online stores don’t have the overhead expenses associated with retail brick-and-mortar stores, they are often able to offer the most popular consumer electronics at rock bottom prices. Plus, online store offer the added bonus of allowing consumers to comparison shop in order to find the best deal on gaming systems, cell phones, and music and DVD players.

For example, some online stores will offer a variety of video games bundled with an Xbox 360, which can literally save consumers hundreds of dollars. Aside from bundled systems and other bargains, there are other factors to consider when choosing an online store to buy consumer electronics. These factors include real-time ordering and online inventory (so your gift won’t be stuck on backorder), warehouse shipping (rather than having to wait for a middleman to ship the merchandise), and exceptional customer service (such as timely communication and non minimum purchase requirements).

When you find the right store, shopping online for consumer electronics can be a breeze – and a bargain!

An Analysis Of Lexmark

In 2005, Berkshire Hathaway bought about a million shares of Lexmark. I haven’t followed this story closely, but I assume the stock was purchased by Lou Simpson rather than Warren Buffett. I have only two reasons for believing this: the total purchase was small relative to Berkshire’s investable assets and the Lexmark purchase is typical of Simpson’s investment philosophy (or at least, what little I can glean about his investment philosophy from his past purchases). Regardless of who actually makes the purchases, a new Berkshire holding always draws a lot of commentary.

The commentary on Lexmark has been almost uniformly negative. Even many value investors have a very dim view of Lexmark at these prices. Now, I am not a contrarian investor. Psychology and sentiment do not enter into my considerations at all. I’ve bought stocks trading near five year lows, and I’ve bought stocks trading near five year highs. I just try to be rational. I’m not afraid to agree with the consensus, if it’s an accurate representation of reality. Here, it isn’t. The model of Lexmark that has emerged in my mind over the past few weeks bears little resemblance to the Lexmark I’ve seen described elsewhere.

Most of the negative comments about Lexmark have focused on the consumer segment. Yet, more than 75% of Lexmark’s profits come from the business segment. The business segment is Lexmark’s franchise. There, the company has managed to build a moat, not a very wide moat, but a moat nonetheless. Lexmark is the only focused, integrated printing company of any consequence. It understands its business customers?needs, and provides specially tailored solutions that none of its competitors can offer. Worldwide, some very large companies use Lexmark’s products for some very specialized tasks. Among these are retailers, banks, and pharmacies. Lexmark has complete control of their product including the printing technology itself and the software used to manage its printers (i.e., to interface with the user’s computer). Businesses that care about getting these specialized tasks done right (and getting them done cheap) use Lexmark.

Even Lexmark’s competitors have to concede the fact that Lexmark knows printing better than anyone else. Lexmark is the only company that develops its own ink ?jet, monochrome, and color laser technologies. It is a vertically integrated printer business like no other. The two competitors most often mentioned as threats to Lexmark are HP and Dell. While everyone will suffer from deep price cuts; I think it’s HP and Dell who should be scared.

Lexmark has the much stronger competitive position. For years to come, it will be launching the best printing products for high ink consumption tasks. Lexmark hasn’t been focused on competing directly with these companies in the consumer segment; that’s going to change because of the emerging photo printing market.

Lexmark isn’t interested in selling hardware. It’s interested in selling ink. Now that there is real demand emerging for high quality printing within the home, Lexmark is going to start going after the consumer market. Over the next few years, Lexmark will be selling more printers in this segment. A few years after that, the company will see strong recurring revenues from ink sales.

Generic ink cartridges are the biggest threat to the high margin printing business. However, I believe, of all the players in this industry, Lexmark will be the least affected. Its highest margin sales are its most insulated sales. Its lowest margin sales, in its least dominant businesses, are where generic ink will hurt the most.

There is also some concern that Dell could always move away from using Lexmark printers. Let them. From what I can see, sales to Dell will not be a particularly significant high free cash flow margin business. There’s no benefit to the Lexmark brand either. That brand is going to become stronger over the next decade, because the quality is already there. Lexmark simply hasn’t been that visible to consumers. The Dell deal doesn’t help build the Lexmark brand. Honestly, I wouldn’t be terribly troubled if Lexmark’s sales to Dell dropped to zero tomorrow. Such an occurrence would not materially affect my valuation of Lexmark.

As far as I can tell, Lexmark’s management is excellent. They understand the printer business better than anyone (they also happen to understand the science of printing better than anyone ?CEO Paul Curlander has a PhD in electrical engineering from MIT). Lexmark’s management also sees highly profitable opportunities in printing long ?term, despite a very competitive situation short ?term. I agree with that assessment.

Within the printer business, there is a real danger of ferocious price competition. However, I do not believe there is a real danger of prolonged ferocious price competition. Lexmark is the company best positioned to weather the storm. It will generate tons of free cash flow, none of which has to be siphoned off to other lines of businesses, as it does at all of Lexmark’s competitors. Lexmark’s high free cash flow margin recurring revenue stream will supply it with more than enough ammunition to outlast its competitors. They may be deep pocketed, but eventually, they will have to answer to Wall Street. Long ?term, they can’t compete with Lexmark. It will take them some time to realize that. But, Lexmark has the time.

That’s my assessment of Lexmark on qualitative grounds. How does the stock look quantitatively?

The stock is selling for about 15 times earnings and 10 times cash flow. Right now, a dollar of Lexmark’s stock buys you a dollar of sales. I think that’s a bargain. Not many companies of this caliber sell at a price ?to ?sales ratio of one.

For the last ten years, Lexmark’s return on equity has not fallen below 20%. During the same period, the company’s return on assets never fell below 10%. The free cash flow margin has generally been in the 5 ?10% range.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Lexmark’s ROE and free cash flow fall substantially in the next few years. However, long ?term, I believe a return on equity of 15 ?20% and a free cash flow margin of 8 ?10% are sustainable. In fact, if I was forced to pick an exact ROE that Lexmark could sustain I would pick 20%. But, I would also caution you not to expect that for the next five years or so.

The important estimate is the 8 ?10% free cash flow margin. That’s the best way to value Lexmark. At one times sales, you have an 8 ?10% yield, if you think sales can be sustained. If you think sales can grow, you have to factor that into your analysis. At present, a discount rate of 8% seems appropriate.

I never do a discounted free cash flow analysis on this blog, because I feel the variables that go into are something you have to decide on for yourself. I don’t want to slap an exact figure on the value of a company, because I don’t want to suggest that kind of precision. But here, you can clearly see how I’d value Lexmark. I gave you what I think Lexmark’s free cash flow margin will be (8-10%), you know what Lexmark’s sales are ($5.4 billion), and I gave you the discount rate I thought was most appropriate (8%). The only necessary variable I haven’t provided is a sales growth estimate, and I’m not going to provide that, because I don’t want you to think it has anything to do with the next five years.

It doesn’t. I’m looking at this company well beyond that point, and I like what I see. Lexmark will strengthen its brand (with consumers), and people will still be printing. So, yes, I am projecting revenue growth for Lexmark; and yes, it is enough to suggest Lexmark is worth substantially more than $5.5 billion.

Download MP4 For Iphone

If you’re lucky enough to be one of the early Iphone owners, there’s a good chance that you’ll want to download some movies for it, which come in MP4 format. If that’s the case there are a few things you will need-a computer, internet access, and obviously your Iphone. Check out the rest of this article to find out how to go about the rest.

In order to make sure you don’t spend 3 months downloading each movie, there are a few prerequisites-firstly, you’ll need a fairly modern computer-it doesn’t have to be some big gaming powerhouse, but as long as it’s not more than say 5 years old, and of course you will need the fastest internet connection you can find. It is possible to download the MP4s using dial up, but it will literally take you weeks.

It’s also worth noting that at this point there is no way to download stuff like this directly to the Iphone, so you will need to make sure you have the required space free on your computer, so you can save it there and transfer it to the Iphone.

The other essential you are going to need to have to download the MP4s for the Iphone is somewhere to download them from. This sounds obvious, but is often the hardest piece of the puzzle to crack.

You’ll find the MP4 download sites on the net fall into 2 distinct categories- Sites that are unregulated and dangerous, letting people upload whatever they want with no regulation, so you have some losers there uploading viruses and stuff, and the other category which is just normal websites trying to make a living.

Traditionally, people get their downloads from torrent sites, but they fit directly into the first category. People have no idea how dangerous it can be to use those kinds of sites-not only because of the dangerous software, but because they are in fact illegal. People go to jail for this.

The newer and probably the safer kind of site are the ones that have started to appear over the last few months-they offer generally a wider selection of downloads than the torrent sites, and they are certainly safer for your computer. The way it works is that you would pay them a one off admin fee to secure your membership, and in return they would grant you unlimited access to their download library. The membership will usually last for lifetime, which will literally give you thousands and thousands of downloads for the price of that one off fee.

Hopefully you have found this article useful and will now be able to safely download MP4s for your Iphone.

Raising the Standards in Mobile Imaging

The latest addition to the small, but growing, group of 5 megapixel camera phones is the stylish Samsung G800. While this amazing slide phone wasn’t the first with a 5 megapixel camera, the G800 is the first mobile phone to include an optical zoom with such a high quality camera. This Samsung masterpiece is also one of the best looking high quality camera phones currently available.

The latest imaging technology can not yet be packaged into an ultra-slim, super lightweight casing, but the Samsung G800 is comfortable to hold and is an ideal size for taking pictures. The shiny, silver casing is subtle, but sleek, and the G800 sports a trendy slider design. The full colour display screen takes up most of the phone’s face, measuring 2.4 inches, and is perfect for viewing the incredible pictures captured with the phone’s camera.

A simple navigation pad is located at the bottom of the screen, along with two soft keys and the call buttons. The Samsung marvel slides open to display a typical flat, slider-style keypad. The top row of buttons may be more difficult to access, but the other keys may be more easily distinguished than the buttons of many smaller handsets. Turn the G800 over and the handset transforms into a digital camera, quite similar and comparable to a dedicated camera.

The 5 megapixel camera is the most appealing feature of this stylish slider and there is no doubt why. The Samsung G800 is currently the premier camera phone and could seriously rival some of this year’s hottest handsets, including the iPhone. Not only does the G800 take digital camera style photographs that can be printed on your Pictbridge compatible printer directly from the handset, it also features a number of features previously only found on standalone cameras, like Wide Dynamic Range and face detection. This camera phone also boasts a user-friendly camera-like interface that is a first for mobile phones.

The Samsung G800 takes both pictures and videos and features integrated editing software for both. The optical zoom feature pushes the G800 ahead of the competition and the power of a real Xenon flash ensures perfect shots day and night. The music player and integrated, stereo FM radio are just as impressive, supporting all common formats and providing high quality sound.

The G800 is an all-around good mobile phone. The internal memory is more than many handsets, at 160 MB, and a memory card slot allows unlimited storage for your favourite songs, pictures, and games. The Samsung G800 supports most types of messaging, including email attachments, and features 3G connectivity as well as Bluetooth. Unfortunately, wi-fi connectivity was forgotten.

Besides the lack of wi-fi and the somewhat bulky size, the G800 is a stylish phone that is paving the road for camera phone technology. The Samsung G800 may just earn the recognition of this year’s most magnificent mobile phone. It’s difficult to follow up on the successful U600 and G600, but Samsung has done it successfully and can consider the G800 to be another feather in its cap.

iPods in the Workplace: Diligence or Distraction?

Posted by admin under News on Thursday Jan 12, 2012

The most wonderful and irritating thing about iPods in the office, says author Barbara Pachter, is their ability to cut workers off from the real world. “The ‘pro’ part of it is that their music doesn’t really bother other people, and it may help some people focus.” she said. “The downside is that people get so caught up in what they are listening to that they don’t hear others talking to them.”
ipod, iphone, apple, mac, gadget, zune, itunes
Aplet, 32 and a former rock musician, rarely separates himself from his iPod, and that includes while he’s at work.

When he’s not enjoying his downloaded music, from Bob Marley to the White Stripes, he listens to podcasts about Web design. Recently he plugged his iPod into the office’s audio system and blared holiday music, much to the delight of his fellow staffers.

“My iPod’s a lifesaver,” says Aplet. “If I’m coding a Web site and I need to be focused and not distracted by conversations, I’ll put on a headset and tune out. Then I’ll just pound away on the keyboard.”

Tuning Out to Get Cranking

Office drones everywhere have been doing the same thing for years, and their ranks seem to be growing.

A recent survey by Spherion, a recruiting and staffing company, found that nearly a third of U.S. workers now listen to music on their iPods or similar devices while on the job. About 80 percent of those workers said the devices improve their job satisfaction and productivity.

“I am in favor of any technology that can be used for entertainment while looking exactly like work to the casual observer,” jokes “Dilbert” cartoonist Scott Adams in an e-mail interview. “And any entertainment you can find during a business meeting is well worth the risk of being detected.”

However, what do bosses and colleagues think about the iPod invasion? That’s where things can get complicated.
Closing Doors

Is listening to music at work really a boost to productivity, they wonder, or is it a distraction?

Does plugging into an iPod isolate listeners from their coworkers, shutting down natural communication and driving wedges between younger employees and their less-technologically savvy colleagues? Will an employee who is wrapped up in a Jordin Sparks song hear her telephone, or a fire alarm?

What about security issues? Is it possible for a disgruntled worker to download sensitive corporate information as easily as he can a song from iTunes?

Some companies, typically smaller, tech-oriented firms, are fine with their employees firing up iPods and MP3 players on the job. A few, including international firms like National Semiconductor and Capital One Financial, have even purchased them in bulk for employees who can use them to listen to training sessions and other company communications at their desks, while traveling or even at home.

‘You’ve Got to Be Careful’

However, not all companies are excited about the invasion of the iPod people.

Asked about iPods at Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) in Folsom, Calif., company spokesperson Teri Munger pauses.

“I have never seen anyone with an iPod in the workplace,” at least in her building, she says.

The tiny players are not as innocuous as they look, some companies insist, and raise some serious workplace questions.

“They’re wonderful devices,” says Barbara Pachter, an office-etiquette and communications specialist in New Jersey. “With all of these kinds of technologies, though, it’s about how you use them in your individual work space. You’ve got to be careful.”

The Spherion survey, conducted by Harris Interactive (Nasdaq: HPOL), found that younger workers are most likely to listen to music on their iPods while working. Almost half of adults ages 25 to 29 say they do so, compared with 22 percent of workers ages 50 to 64.

Those iPods, MP3 players and the like seem to be most commonly used among workers with “more monotonous jobs,” like filing and photocopying, and solitary jobs that require little interaction with colleagues or the public, says Brett Wiatre, Spherion’s Western region director of operations.

“In that kind of niche situation, the music seems to keep people motivated and moving,” Wiatre says.
Not All Workplaces Right for iPod

Daniel Robin, a workplace consultant in Santa Cruz, Calif., agrees that the devices have their place at some work sites.

However, at others? Not so much.

“It seems fine if a person is flying solo, like an information-technology technician who spends a lot of time in transit to user sites,” Robin says. However, they’re “safety no-nos,” he says, in other cases.

“What if you can’t hear a forklift approaching?” Robin asks.

Or a colleague complaining?

The most wonderful and irritating thing about iPods in the office, says Pachter, is their ability to cut workers off from the real world.

“The ‘pro’ part of it is that their music doesn’t really bother other people, and it may help some people focus,” says Pachter, coauthor of the book New Rules@Work ($13.95, Prentice Hall, 272 pages).

“The downside is that people get so caught up in what they are listening to that they don’t hear others talking to them. When their headsets are on, it’s impossible to tell if they’re listening to you, or listening to their music. It drives me crazy!”

“Dilbert” creator Adams, who has poked fun at the phenomenon in his wildly popular comic strip about life in the work cubicle, says he doubts that anyone “is more productive with distractions than without.”

“Still, anything that makes your coworkers less likely to talk to you has to be a good thing,” he jokes.

Dale Carnegie Training takes the matter a bit more seriously. The company advises caution when using iPods at work.

“Even if your office sanctions iPod use, first consider your specific position and goals,” Dale Carnegie’s Web site reads. “Are you new and trying to form good working relationships?

“The iPod may isolate you and discourage interaction with others.”

Setting Policies

At Intel, the decision about whether using iPods is appropriate is up to individual managers, says Munger. Generally, it’s acceptable if “work is not impacted, employees are acting in a safe manner and their cube mates are not being distracted,” she says.

Wiatre of Spherion says some companies are setting policies about when and how iPods can be used on the job, just as they have placed restrictions on the use of cell phones and other personal technological devices.

“Some of our clients ban them,” he says. “Others are setting policies specific to the job and the work environment. We encourage employers to set established, consistent standards, so that there are no misunderstandings.”

Folsom startup SynapSense has no such policies. Most of its 40 employees, who hail from such far-flung places as South Africa, India and Barbados, embrace iPods at work, says spokesperson Patricia Nealon.

“We have a very diverse set of people, and they listen to all kinds of different music,” she says. “In a cubicle environment where people retain their own space and need to focus on what’s right in front of them, it works out great.”

For software developers or code writers, anyway. Nealon herself leaves her iPod at home.

“I’m a marketing person, and I love interacting with people around me,” she says. “I only use my iPod when I work out.”
